If you're finding that typing directly on the iPad glass screen is difficult, you might want to download an app I've been trying out lately, called TapTyping. You can get the free version which allows you to time yourself and take some sample lessons or you can purchase the full training course for $3.99. They have a blog that shows a good video (scroll down at the blog) of a person typing at 81 words per minute on the iPad screen that is pretty motivating. They steer you away from typing with only a few fingers or, as some folks do, with just their thumbs. I'd like to promote good typing skills to the 8th graders when using the iPad, so I think it's good to have them practice properly (and us too).
